SQUIRREL by Sav Rae Jackson

Last month, the cast and crew gathered at a local Cleveland cafe for the first day on set of "SQUIRREL," a short film by Cleveland Indie Film Project participant Sav Rae Jackson! After months of preparation, Jackson is the first out of six filmmakers who have the opportunity to use Cleveland Camera Rental's equipment and crew to bring their short film to life this summer. We asked Jackson to talk about her experience on set and plans amidst the post-production process! Read more below.

When her father makes an abrupt visit, a young woman struggles with the possibility of disappointing her brother and hurting the woman she loves.

Meet Sav Rae! Director, Filmmaker & Screenwriter of short film, "SQUIRREL"

What was your favorite part about being on set and leading the production of "SQUIRREL?"

Jackson: My favorite part about being on set was being surrounded by such a supportive & professional cast and crew. I consider myself lucky to have had a reliable team to lean on and have actors who were passionate about the material and took their craft seriously. I especially enjoyed the collaborative nature in helping my vision come to life which made directing 1000x easier and not intimidating!

Were there any challenges you faced on set? How did you overcome them?

Jackson: There were times when we had to pivot from originally planned shots or blocking due to sequences not translating well on screen, but after brainstorming we secured the right look. However, when that happens, it eats up time and that can become stressful for several reasons. Fortunately, I heeded to some advice I received during pre-prod that emphasized always anticipating being an hour behind when creating schedules. Ultimately, cheating time ended up being a great tool and alleviated set heat!

Now that production is complete, what are you looking forward to most in the post-production process?

Jackson: I'm looking forward to the edit, piecing together all the beautiful shots, and exploring the edit’s relationship with storytelling firsthand. While I anticipate challenges while editing, I know that I still have help on and off set because that's the relationship the crew and I have built during our 2-day shoot. I'm eager to see the finished product and also learn what I can improve on for the next project!

Anything else you'd like to share about the process or shooting weekend?

Jackson: I've learned the truth of the notion that the director sets the tone of the set environment, so I value how intentional I have to be about ensuring everyone feels valued and safe on set. A priceless gesture is to encourage a collective deep breath(s) to start the shooting day!
